Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Blue Ridge, Georgia, Darrington Academy is a great boarding school for at-risk and troubled teenaged boys and girls. The climate at Darrington is perfect: as we experience all four seasons, and we do so without apology! We have summer fun (our Fourth of July fireworks are the talk of the town, and upper levels get to go boating and camping), we get occasional winter snow, pumpkin carving in the fall (we carved the two biggest ones in the whole state last year), and we plant vegetable gardens and flowers in the spring. Our wonderful cooks use the vegetables that the children plant, grow, and harvest to have a few special “veggie only” meals prepared at the end of summer from our very own garden! They are a big hit with the kids!
We aim at providing a safe and secure environment to our students in order to help them improve mentally, physically and socially; thus enhancing their family relationships. Troubled teens get numerous opportunities to recognize their problems and chances to overcome them. Our highly dedicated and well-educated faculty is always there to help guide the students, and assist them in finding solutions to their problems. Our teachers monitor the individual students’ performance, and strive to motivate them to excel in their academics. Our well trained family representatives, who act as a liaison between the student and their families, guide the children to compete with the world by facing all their difficult situations boldly and truthfully.
Academics and Facilities
Darrington Academy is fully accredited. The credits earned by your child here are transferable to any other accredited high school. Darrington offers the basic core curriculum including Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, English, British and American Literature, as well as electives such as PE, Health, Foreign Languages, Home Economics, etc. In class, we provide a computer-aided learning methodology that lets our students study and learn at their own pace. Our teachers are always available to the students, and work with them one-on-one in order to maximize and streamline the process of learning. We also assist students in studying for SAT and ACT tests.
And don’t be surprised if you come to tour Darrington Academy and spy a dog in the classroom! At Darrington Academy, Miss Helen, our Biology and Upper-Math teacher, trains dogs for Paws for a Cause. Paws for a Cause trains assistance dogs for handicapped people, and she also trains dogs as ‘therapy dogs’ that help with emotionally and mentally challenged people. At Darrington, the kids get to help with the training! The kids love working with these fine animals!
Your child can also participate in specially designed counseling sessions provided by independently contracted psychiatrists and/or therapists in order to better cope with negative or traumatic experiences of past. These sessions combined with the schools overall structure and character building program, help students with low self-esteem or problematic behavior by guiding them toward improving their weak areas and avoiding future conflict. We help our students develop the confidence and leadership skills that will set them apart from other children, so that they are ready to take on the challenges of real life and their academic future.
